I have been hairdressing now for 17 years. Six years ago, at the age of 24, and with no business experience, I decided to buy my own salon and work for myself.

I had always worked for employers and felt that the only way to stay challenged and earn more within the hairdressing industry was to go out on my own.

As an employee, I had only ever seen the money going in the til and not what my employer was paying out, so with my false sense of ideas, I thought running a business would be very easy and I would make a lot of money quickly. What a wakeup call the last six years have been.

Running a business is like a constant rollercoaster. After losing a second reliable and loyal staff member, I felt very vulnerable and I didn’t know what else to do.
